ROSS VAN REENEN
I started full-time self-taught sculpting in +- 1990 after teaching for many years. I studied Rodin, Galil Gibran, and Giacometty as tutor masters.
The practice is that a student follows a master artist until he can create through his own unique style and method. I have sculpted, Koedoe, Elephant, life-size Black eagle, Meerkat, Buffalo, and lots more out of copper, brass, and metal sheeting.
Later in my career, I specialized in ” pointillism” welding. The result is a sculpture that reminds you of a bronze. The result is never to be repeated, as it is a sure “one’s- of” sculpture.
I am fond of the female form and face studies(big and small) because of its elegance, natural flow and the romance associated with it.
The method I follow is that I first start at a subject’s nose and fill it in as it comes into the atmosphere.I always look for that moment in time movement. The movement identifies the mood of the sculpture. A moment in movement !
